Browser profiles
Keep separate cookies, logins and extensions per site or account, and choose which profile a Web tab uses.
A browser profile is a separate set of cookies, logins and extensions for Web tabs. Two tabs in different profiles do not share anything, so you can be signed in to the same site with two accounts at once.
The built-in profiles
- Standard - used when you choose no profile. Links from other programs open here too.
- Private - keeps nothing on disk. Its cookies live only in memory and are gone once its last tab closes. Pages opened in it are not added to the history, and its tabs cannot be pinned.
You cannot rename or delete the built-in profiles. Every other profile is yours to create.
Create a profile
From the picker:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+T and choose Web.
- In the Profile row, click + (New profile).
- Type a name, for example
Work. - Pick an icon and a colour (see below).
- Click Create profile, or press Enter. Esc cancels.
The new profile is selected right away for the tab you are about to open.
From the settings: open Settings > Browser profiles and click New profile.
Pick an icon and colour
Until you pick an icon, the profile shows the first letter of its name. To choose another:
- type into Search icons - cat, moon, letter, euro… to filter the gallery,
- click an icon, then a colour.
Logos keep their own colours, so the colour choice is not offered for them.
The icon shows wherever the profile appears: in the picker, in the Browser profile list of a saved site, and next to an open Web tab in the sidebar. Hover it there to see Profile: and the name.
Open a tab in a profile
In the picker, click a profile icon in the Profile row before you open the site. The name of the chosen profile shows next to the icons.
The row starts with the profile of the tab in front. So a site you open while working in Work opens in Work too, unless you click another one.
Links that a page opens in a new tab stay in the profile of that page.
Give a saved site its own profile
- Right-click the saved site in the sidebar and choose Edit….
- Under Browser profile, choose the profile.
- Click Apply.
From now on the site opens with that profile's cookies, logins and extensions. Private is not offered here.
When you pin an open tab, the saved site keeps the profile the tab runs in.
Move an open tab to another profile
Right-click the tab in the sidebar and choose Move to profile, then the profile.
A running tab cannot change its profile. The page opens again in a new tab in the other profile. Logins and anything you typed stay behind in the old one.
- An unsaved tab is replaced by the new one.
- A saved site stays open as it is, next to the new tab.
Install extensions in a profile
Extensions belong to the profile they were installed in. Open a tab in that profile, click the puzzle icon at the top right and choose Search the Chrome Web Store. The store opens in the same profile.
See Web for the rest of the extensions menu.
Profiles and routes
A profile keeps its data separately for each route. If you open the same profile once directly and once through a proxy, the two tabs do not share cookies, logins or extensions. See Routes.
Rename or delete a profile
Open Settings > Browser profiles. Each profile shows how much it stores, for example 12 MB of cookies, logins and extensions.
- Edit changes the name, icon and colour. The profile's data stays where it is.
- Delete… removes the profile and everything it keeps: cookies, logins, history and extensions. Vandle asks first.
After deleting:
- tabs still open in the profile keep running until you close them,
- saved sites that used it open in Standard,
- files that were still in use are removed the next time Vandle starts.
