Layouts and splits

Put tabs side by side, move between the panes with the keyboard and keep a layout for later.

A layout shows several tabs at once, each in its own pane. A terminal beside the files of the same host, an API beside its database, Claude Code beside the project it works on.

Put a tab beside another

  • Press Ctrl+Shift+Y. The picker opens, and what you choose appears to the right of the tab in front. Shift+Enter puts it below instead.
  • Or right-click a row in the sidebar and choose Show beside the tab in front.
  • Or drag a sidebar row onto the tab. Where you let go decides the side: near the left, right, top or bottom edge, the new pane goes there.

A layout that is open counts as one entry when you switch tabs, after the single tabs.

Move between the panes

Keys Moves to
Ctrl+Alt+← → ↑ ↓ the pane on that side
Ctrl+Shift+J the next pane, left to right, top to bottom

Where two panes share the side you move towards, you land in the one that shares more of the border. At the edge of the layout nothing happens, so the key goes on to the tab.

These keys also work from a web page and from a remote desktop pane, so you never get stuck in one.

Arrange the panes

  • Drag the border between two panes to resize them.
  • Drag a pane by its header onto another pane to move it to that side.
  • Show alone in a pane's header shows that tab without the others. The layout stays open.
  • Remove from the layout takes the pane out. The tab itself stays open. A pinned layout that would be left with a single pane is deleted instead.

Keep a layout

A layout you build lives in this window until you close it. To keep it, right-click it in the sidebar, choose Pin and give it a name. A pinned layout opens again with Open and reconnects every pane at once. Rename… and Delete layout… are in the same menu.

A pinned layout holds only saved connections. Tabs in it that are not saved yet are pinned along with it, after you confirm. When you later add an unsaved tab, Vandle offers to pin it first. A private browser tab cannot be part of a pinned layout.

To add a saved connection to a pinned layout, right-click its row and choose Add to layout.

Help beside your work

F1 opens these help pages as a narrow pane on the right edge of what you see, with the page for the tab in front. In a terminal F1 belongs to the program running there, so use Ctrl+F1. Your tab keeps the focus. Press it again in another tab and the help turns to that tab's page. The help pane is not saved into a pinned layout.

See Keyboard for every key and how to change it.
