Help · Kinds of tab
VNC
Open a VNC screen in a tab, sign in with its password, share text through the clipboard and control the keyboard.
Open a VNC screen
- Press Ctrl+Shift+T and pick VNC.
- Type the machine, for example
10.42.0.77. - Press Enter.
Without a port, Vandle uses 5900. VNC's own notation works too:
host:1is display 1, which is port 5901.host::5901is the port itself.- A number of 100 or more after one colon is read as a port.
Links that start with vnc:// open the same way. VNC has no user names, so an address with @ is not accepted.
To reach the machine through a proxy or ProxyPass, set the Route of the connection. See Routes.
Vandle asks for the password only when the server wants one. A server without authentication opens straight away.
- Tick Save this connection with the sign-in (or Remember the sign-in on a saved connection) to keep the password. It is stored only after the server accepts it.
- A wrong or outdated password is asked for again: "The server did not accept the password."
- Cancel ends the attempt.
Vandle signs in with the classic VNC password. A server that only offers TLS, VeNCrypt or RA2 is refused, because Vandle cannot verify their certificates and keys. Allow VNC password authentication on the server to connect.
Screen size
A server that can resize its desktop follows the size of the tab. Any other server keeps its size, and Vandle scales the picture to fit the tab, in proportion.
Give the screen the keyboard
Click into the screen. While it has the keyboard, the header shows Keys → remote.
Keys your own desktop normally takes for itself then go to the remote machine:
- Windows: the Windows key, Print Screen, Ctrl+Esc and Alt+Esc. Alt+Tab stays on your computer.
- Linux: the Super key, Print and your desktop's shortcuts, through a keyboard grab. Under Wayland this depends on the compositor allowing it.
Typed characters reach the server as your keyboard layout produces them, so @ and umlauts arrive as typed.
Take the keyboard back
Press Ctrl+Alt+Home, or click Keys → remote in the header. The keyboard stays with your computer until you click the screen again.
Switching to another window also gives the keyboard back.
Send Ctrl+Alt+Del
Press Ctrl+Alt+End, or click the keyboard button in the header (Send Ctrl+Alt+Del). Vandle sends the three keys to the server one after another.
Clipboard
Text travels both ways:
- Text the remote machine copies lands on your clipboard.
- Text you copy on your computer goes to the server when the screen gets the focus. If you copied something while working elsewhere, click the screen and it follows.
VNC carries clipboard text as Latin-1. Umlauts arrive; characters beyond that turn into question marks on the other side.
Vandle keys inside a VNC screen
A VNC screen keeps every key for the remote machine, except the few that reach remote desktops. The most useful ones:
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
| Ctrl+Alt+Home | Take the keyboard back |
| Ctrl+Alt+End | Ctrl+Alt+Del on the remote machine |
| Ctrl+Shift+T | New tab or switch to one |
| Ctrl+Shift+W | Close the tab |
| Ctrl+Tab | Next tab |
| Ctrl+Shift+B | Show/hide the sidebar |
| Ctrl+Shift+Enter | Full screen |
The full list is on the Remote desktop page. Keys can be changed in Settings, under Hotkeys.
Sound
VNC tabs have no sound and no microphone.
When the connection drops
Vandle does not reconnect by itself. The tab says what happened; click Connect to try again.
