SFTP

Browse a server's files, upload and download, and copy between two sides of one tab.

An SFTP tab shows the files on a server over SSH. It starts in your home directory on the server. You can open a second side next to it and copy between the two.

Connect

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+T and choose SFTP.
  2. Type a target, for example pi@192.168.0.10, or pi@192.168.0.10:2222 for another port. sftp://… works too.
  3. Click Connect directly: …, or pick a saved connection from the list.

From a connected SSH tab, Ctrl+Shift+E opens an SFTP tab on the same host, with the same sign-in and route.

Signing in works as for SSH: the Sign in dialog for a typed target, or a password, the ssh-agent or a Private key on a saved connection (right-click it in the sidebar, Edit…, Authentication). The server's key is confirmed the same way. See SSH for the details.

Find your way around

  • Double-click a folder, or select it and press Enter, to open it.
  • Backspace or the up arrow at the top left goes up one folder.
  • The bar at the top shows the current path.
  • Click Name, Size or Modified to sort. Click again to reverse. Folders always come first.
  • The eye button shows or hides hidden files (names starting with a dot). Ctrl+H does the same.
  • The reload button reads the folder again.

The line at the bottom tells you how many entries the folder holds and how many are hidden. It also shows the result of the last action, and errors, which you can dismiss with the close button.

Select several entries

Ctrl+click adds or removes a single entry. Shift+click selects a range. Right-click the selection for the menu.

Upload files

  • Click Upload at the top right and pick one or more files.
  • Or drag files and folders from your file manager onto the list.

They land in the folder you are looking at. Folders are copied with everything in them.

Download files

Right-click the selection and choose Download….

  • With no download folder set, one file asks where to save it, several entries ask for a target folder.
  • To skip the question, set a folder in the settings (Ctrl+Shift+,) under Defaults > Files > Download location. Reset goes back to asking.

Work with two sides

Click Split at the top right of the tab. The picker opens; choose another SFTP server, a WebDAV folder, or a folder on this computer (Files). It opens as the right side.

With two sides:

  • The arrow buttons in the side headers (→ and ←) copy the selection to the other side.
  • F5 copies the selection to the other side.
  • You can drag entries from one side onto the other.
  • Upload and Download… make way for Copy to the other side (F5) in the right-click menu.

The name at the top of each side is a button: click it to show a different connection on that side. The close button in the right header (Close the second side) closes it again.

Copies go into the folder the other side is showing. A copy onto itself is refused.

Rename, delete and create folders

  • Rename (F2): select an entry and press F2.
  • Delete (Del): select entries and press Delete. You are asked first. Folders are deleted with all their content, and this cannot be undone.
  • New directory: the folder button at the top, or Ctrl+Shift+N. With two sides, the key acts on the side you last clicked into.

Overwriting and transfers

If an entry of the same name is already there, Vandle asks before it overwrites. Choose Overwrite, or cancel to leave what is there.

While a transfer runs, the bottom line shows its progress and a Cancel button. When both sides know Unix permissions, an executable file stays executable.

When the connection drops

The tab shows Connection failed with the reason. Click Connect or press Ctrl+Shift+R to connect again. A running transfer is cancelled when the connection drops. A dropped second side shows its own Connect button.
